Canada's largest mosque was unveiled in Calgary Saturday morning.

The stunning architectural landmark was open to the public for the grand opening.

It's located at 4353-54 Avenue NE.

The president of the Ahmadiyya Muslin Community of Canada, Lal Khan Malik, says the 48-thousand square foot Mosque is a symbol of people and social harmony. "The opening of this mosque is an historic occasion for the Ahmadi Muslims to add to the Canadian society. We invite everyone to use it as a meeting place to build harmony and respect."

The head of the Worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslin Community, His Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad inaugurated the new mosque with a Friday sermon that was telecast live-via-satellite across the globe.

Malik says, "The mosque is a very important part of the community and will bring Muslims and non-Muslims closer together."

It took more than two years to build the mosque and it cost 15-million dollars to construct.

The money was raised entirely through donations from members of the Ahmadiyya Muslin community from across Canada.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Leader of the Official Opposition, Stephane Dion, and Mayor Dave Bronconnier attended the unveiling ceremony.

Additional mosque projects are in the works in Vancouver, Saskatoon and Brampton.
