Calgarians will get a chance tonight to support Quebec students and protest Quebec's new rules against public demonstrations.
Casserole Night in Canada is a national rally in support of Quebec students.
Demonstrators are encouraged to bring pots and pans tonight, Wednesday, May 30th at 8:00 PM to 8 Avenue at 1 Street S.W. (in front of The Bay).
The 'casseroles' movement sprang up in response to the Quebec government's introduction of Bill 78, a new law introduced last week to quell student protests over tuition fee increases. The pot-banging protests began with a Facebook call on 19 May, and have since spread across the country.
Quebec introduced Bill 78 in response to growing student demonstrations against government proposals that would increase university fees by C$325 a year for five years.
The legislation officially suspends university terms, in response to the class walkouts which have been observed in many institutions since February, and also places restrictions on protests.
Police in Quebec now have to be given eight hours' notice prior to demonstrations of 50 or more people. Protesters must also provide, and stick to, a strict itinerary. Individuals breaching the law can be fined up to $5,000; student associations $125,000.
