Calgary police have charged a Morley man in connection with the fatal hit and run that claimed the life of a young girl.

The crash happened at about 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, 2012 on Highway 1 near the Valley Ridge Blvd. exit.

Police say a westbound Pontiac Grand Am was rear ended on the Trans-Canada Highway by a 2002 Kia Sedona.

The Grand Am then lost control, flipped, and landed in the ditch.

Eleasha Wesley, 10, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the car and later died. Eleasha was in grade four at Exshaw School.

Three others inside the vehicle suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Police took a 19-year-old man into custody on Tuesday, May 22, 2012.

Fergus Matthew Hunter, of Morley, is charged with one count each of hit and run and dangerous operation of motorized vehicle causing death.

This isn't the first encounter Hunter has had with police. Last November, seven criminal charges were laid against him after a brawl.

In that incident, a fight broke out between two groups outside a home on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation. Police say during the fight a group of people were run over by a van. Chelsy Chapman was one of the victims and told CTV News someone beat her with a crowbar leaving her with cuts and bruises all over her body.

The charges laid against Hunter, after that November brawl, include dangerous driving causing bodily harm, assault, and aggravated assault.
