The investigation into the fatal hit and run that claimed the life of a young girl continues and police believe they may have found the vehicle involved.

The crash happened at about 10:30 p.m. on Thursday on Highway 1 near the Valley Ridge Blvd. exit.

Police say a westbound Pontiac Grand Am was rear ended, and then lost control, flipped, and landed in the ditch.

The girl, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was ejected from the car and later died.

She has been identified as 10-year-old Eleasha Wesley.

Eleasha was in grade four at Exshaw School on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation.

Investigators aren't sure why the driver of the van fled the scene, but say there could be many reasons.

"There could be many reasons why the driver left the scene – they had alcohol, they are scared. Until we speak to them, it is difficult to say why they've done it," said Acting Sgt. Colin Foster with the CPS Traffic Unit.

Three others inside the vehicle suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Investigators say the driver of a red 2002 Kia Sedona fled westbound at a high rate of speed.

Police believe that they may have found the vehicle and are crediting the work of a witness who followed the fleeing van.

"Information came to us from a witness who saw the collision itself. This witness followed the offending vehicle for some distance to a place they were able to record the license plate call police and they were able to record the license plate," said Sgt. Colin Foster.

A van fitting the description was tracked to a property on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation west of the city.

The vehicle was on the property for most of the day on Friday while police waited for a warrant to remove it.

There is no word yet on whether they were able to locate the driver but police are looking into whether or not speed and alcohol played a factor in the crash.
