The current frontrunner in the provincial election was on the defensive on Wednesday.

Wildrose leader Danielle Smith has raised the ire of many people with her party's perceived position on so-called "conscience rights"

Smith is being criticized for saying in the past that professionals should have the right to refuse to perform certain duties if they go against their conscience.

The argument has often been used by marriage commissioners across Canada who don't want to perform gay marriages.

Many also fear physicians could use it when it comes to sensitive issues such as abortion or contraception.

Smith has suggested a separate court be established to deal with these and other humans rights issues

"All of these freedoms under our charter need to be balanced against competing freedoms," says Smith. "The best way to balance those is to make sure these are adjudicated in the courts. I think what our members were responding to is that sometimes there is an imbalance in the assessment of rights."

Alison Redford was in Calgary on Wednesday.

She says she's been following the Wildrose position on this issue and she's frightened by their stance

"I think it's a critical discussion point in this election," says Redford. "I believe the future of this province is about building a diverse community and welcoming new people to this province and ensuring that everyone who comes here feels welcomed and respected as individuals."

The topic is expected to continue to be a point of contention throughout the campaign.
