Two local women are among those running to lead Alberta through the next four years and both were educated at the same high school in Calgary.

Ed Wozniak has been teaching for thirty years and says he never forgets a face, especially when a student goes on to great things.

"When Alison first won the party leadership I immediately recognized her and started to think about when she was in the school," said Wozniak. "Very genuine, down to earth manner about her. A promising student with tremendous potential, but certainly not somebody at the time, I would have said, that might well be our premier."

Wozniak can brag that he taught Alberta's most recent premier but he had another student who is also looking to lead the province.

Four years after Redford left Bishop Carroll High School, Danielle Smith arrived.

"Danielle was a little more raucous I would think. Certainly more of a spirited individual," said Wozniak.

The fact that the two leaders went to school here isn't lost on students.

"It really opens your mind to all the possibilities that maybe you didn't consider," said Madison Yaworski Student Council President. "That some students in our school could go on to do similar things was really inspirational."

Staff at the school says they aren't taking sides in this campaign.

They do like to think one winner has already emerged in this race, Bishop Carroll High School.

"I must say, we're pretty proud, we're pretty excited. It shows a little bit, reflects a bit about the students here at Bishop Carroll. I think in many ways they think out of the box," said Daniel Danis.

"This is a great thing. We look at social studies and look at schools in general and look at their primary purpose and that's to really foster a sense of community and participating in democracy and when two of our students end up as party leaders at this time we're just delighted with it," said Wozniak.

In her yearbook photo, Danielle Smith is listed as Marliena Smith.

Marliena is her actual her first name, but she's always gone by Danielle.
