A Calgary judge has found a young man on trial for the death of Adam Cavanagh guilty of first degree murder.
The Crown is requesting that the youth be sentenced as an adult, which could mean a sentence of 25 years.
The defence has not made a decision on whether or not they intend to challenge that proposal.
18 year old Cavanagh was shot and killed while at a house party in February 2007.
He was hit by a bullet fired through the basement window of his home in Temple.
The accused, who was 17 at the time of the murder so cannot be named, told the court that he did not fire the fatal shot.
Instead, he pointed the finger at his best friend, Salim Kadoura.
Kadoura was supposed to testify via video link from Venezuela, but technical difficulties prevented him to do so first, and then he told the court he refused to testify at all.
Kadoura moved to Venezuela in 2010 and there is no extradition treaty in the country, so he cannot be forced to testify in the murder.
