A local radio personality has learned a tough lesson about renting out his home after the tenants turned it into a marijuana grow operation.

Fraser Tuff from X92.9 posted an ad online and rented out his house to a couple in December.

"Nice couple, he was an American running a business up here, she was his wife, recently pregnant and they wanted to move out to the suburbs for the preparations for the birth of their baby," said Tuff.

A week ago police busted a substantial grow op in the basement.

Tuff says the unfinished basement now has a series of rooms with irrigation, power for fans and grow lights installed.

He estimates it will cost him tens of thousands of dollars to not only fix the damage but obtain the proper permits and inspections.

"Its likely going to cost me anywhere from 20 to 40 thousand dollars to get my house so it is cleared so that it can be lived in again," said Tuff.

Tuff says he isn't sure if he will rent the home out again once it is remediated or if he will just try to sell it.

The Calgary Residential Rental Association is offering a course to teach landlords how to use the legislation effectively.
