CTV Calgary's Karen Owen went with a team from World Vision to Sri Lanka to meet some of the people who have benefitted from its programs and even more who need our help.

In part three of her series, Karen focuses on poverty and nutrition and the issues facing thousands of families living in the rural countryside.

A family of three lives in a little mud home in the middle of the jungle.

Their kitchen is pretty typical of the rural homes in Sri Lanka.

A pot balances on top of a fire and often there's not a lot of food to cook with.

Prasangika dreams of something more for her children.

She is three months pregnant and walks half a Kilometre a day to fetch clean water with her son.

Premaysiri, the father, works as often as he can but there's not a lot of work to find and the couple is struggling to repay a loan they took out.

The loan was to be used to grow crops but the crops failed and their previous home was burned to the ground.

The family had to rebuild using mud and palm leaves.

Prasangika went to World Vision for help because three-year-old Prabath is very small for his age.

Malnutrition is one of the most pressing issues facing Sri Lanka.

The problem is a result of poverty and a lack of knowledge about nutrition.

Some of these children and their mothers are taking part in a World Vision program called PD Hearth.

The goal of the program is to teach mothers about nutrition and help them find ways to feed their children.

World vision is looking for a sponsor for Prabath and thousands of others just like him.
