Governor General David Johnston is praising the efforts of one Calgary school for its innovative education programs.

Johnston was greeted by a large crowd in the morning and students made presentations and musical performances.

Arbour Lake School has been developing programs that use cutting edge technology that could be easily replicated in different parts of the country.

The programs use lab space where students are able to have a hands-on experience training skills used in careers in the high tech sector.

The Governor General also spoke to students one on one in a civic mirror classroom discussion where the group tackled big topics like citizenship, leadership, and personal development.

Johnston is now headed to Vancouver for Thursday where he'll speak to volunteers at a community centre.
