Regional emergency services are looking after dozens of displaced residents, after a massive blaze tore through a Fort McMurray apartment building overnight.

Authorities were initially called to the fire at Parson's Creek Landing in the Timberlea area of Fort McMurray around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Fire crews battled the blaze for several hours overnight.

The fire was contained to the north wing of Parson's Creek Landing apartment complex, but residents from all three wings of the complex were evacuated.

"Well we were in bed about 11:15 and there was a loud bang," Nearby resident Wayne Prins said. "It sounded like an explosion so we looked out the window and there was a large fire already coming out of the roof."

A temporary shelter has been set-up at a nearby school for evacuees.

Some apartment residents told CTV News the fire alarms didn't alert them to the situation.

"Some residents have mentioned that," Megan Steiestol, a spokesperson for Wood Buffalo Regional Emergency Services said. "That is something that will be under investigation,

"That is the property manager's responsibility."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. A damage estimate has not yet been released, but police say the level of property damage is considered to be significant.

CTV News has posted a list of phone numbers online for those interested in donating to residents displaced by the fire.
