Some of the rabbits that were captured in a roundup in Canmore were spayed and neutered on Monday thanks to a group of mobile vets.

So far close to forty of the rabbits have been captured and are being housed on an acreage west of Calgary.

The Town of Canmore started catching the bunnies earlier this month and previously said it would kill the rabbits and send the carcasses to wildlife sanctuaries for feed.

A deal was reached with the Earth Animal Rescue Society (EARS).

The group arranged to take the rabbits to a sanctuary where they will live out their natural lives.

"We'd all like to see these rabbits relocated into sanctuary. I don't know if we are going to accomplish that but we are going to try," said Susan Vickery from EARS.

On Monday, vets with Mountain View Mobile Veterinary Care brought in their mobile surgical suite to perform the operations.

The surgical team is donating their time as part of a plan to save the rabbits from euthanasia.

"We thought it was a great idea to save those rabbits rather than put them down and we are just doing our part in it, and our part is spaying and neutering them," said Dr. Lucie Choquette-Levy.

Earth Animal Rescue Society says it costs just over a $100 to care for each rabbit it takes in and so far it has enough funds to care for 170 rabbits.

The Town of Canmore estimates there could be as many as 2000 feral rabbits in the area.
