A Calgary man is facing several charges in connection with a horrific crash last summer that killed two people.

Police and emergency crews were called to the scene of the crash at about 11:55 p.m., on Sunday, June 5, 2011.

They say a Honda CRV with five occupants was travelling southbound on Stoney Trail at a high rate of speed when the driver tried to navigate the ramp to McKnight Boulevard.

The driver lost control and the vehicle left the road and rolled about 120 metres.

Passengers Tina Thanh Nguyen,16, and Amrullah Safari, 20, were not strapped in, and were thrown from the vehicle.

Both were taken to hospital where they died from their injuries.

Two other occupants in the SUV were taken to hospital with minor injuries and were treated and released.

An uninjured man, thought at the time to be the driver, was taken into custody by police but was later released without charges.

After a lengthy investigation, police determined that the driver was one of the occupants originally transported to hospital for minor injuries.

He was arrested without incident on Wednesday, January 25, 2012.

Billal Abbou, 21, from Calgary, has been charged with two counts each of the following:

  • Impaired causing death
  • Impaired causing injury
  • Criminal negligence causing death
  • Criminal negligence causing bodily harm
  • Cause an accident resulting in death
  • Cause an accident causing injury

Abbou has been remanded in custody and his next court appearance is Wednesday, February 1, 2012.
