A number of major buildings across Alberta may require safety inspections because approvals for fire suppression systems were allegedly faked.
Peter Geoffrey Pybus, 63, of Saskatoon, had his licence to practice engineering suspended after an investigation was launched by the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA) into allegations of unskilled practice and unprofessional conduct.
The allegations involve approvals for fire sprinkler systems and other fire suppression equipment in Calgary and other municipalities in the province.
Peter Pybus was working through the firm DFK Engineering Canada Ltd. of Calgary when he was suspended.
APEGGA has also suspended DFK Engineering Canada Ltd.'s permit to practice engineering and say Pybus also worked through BP Consulting Canada Ltd., which was located in the DFK Engineering office.
Pybus, DFK Engineering and BP Consulting have all been involved in fire suppression systems design and inspection for residential and commercial buildings in Alberta.
APEGGA has also warned municipalities, especially those in and around Calgary, not to accept professional documents bearing Pybus' professional stamp and signature and dated after November 9, 2011.
The documents include Alberta Building Code Schedules or letters of compliance.
The engineering association says that it is up to the municipalities to decide if they want to contact affected building owners so they can arrange for inspections and certification by a licensed Professional Engineer.
They are also advising municipalities to review their records to determine which, if any, civic buildings may be affected.
