The forecast for Calgary over the holidays is calling for sunny days and warm weather and those who were hoping for a white Christmas will have to travel east to get their wish.

There is a skiff of snow in some neighbourhoods but for the most part the Chinook winds have melted most of the snow from Calgary yards.

Buddy Harron has been selling Christmas trees for 34 years and in all that time he has seen only a handful of brown Christmases.

"Last year it was brutal with the cold, minus 39," said Harron.

Calgarians who were hoping to try out new sleds and skates out doors will have to save them for the next cold snap and dump of snow.

"I bought a sled for my son, he's 12 years old and loves to play in the snow," said Maria Zapote.

According to Environment Canada's Senior Climatologist, it's not going to get any whiter by Christmas morning.

"Certainly, we've had such a balmy December that no snow flake has a chance. Look at the temperatures on Christmas Day forecasted for Calgary. A plus eight for a high and plus 2 for a low," said Dave Phillips. "I mean melting temperatures around the clock, no freezing at night. These are temperatures during the day that are ten degrees warmer than normal and at night about fifteen degrees warmer than normal.

The same can't be said for parts of the east coast and southern United States.

Residents in parts of Texas and New Mexico were in for a bit of a shock after they woke up to snow, slick roads and cold temperatures.

In Calgary, not everyone is upset about the lack of snow.

Attendance at the local attractions, like the Calgary Zoo goes up and the animals are more likely to come out to greet the guests.

"For example today, our elephants are able to be outside for a little while, they won't be out for a long time, and the keepers keep a close watch on going back in," said Laurie Skene from the Calgary Zoo.
