Two of the four victims in a horrific incident on Highway 2 near Claresholm were identified as PEI baseball players attending an academy in Lethbridge and a third a young woman travelling with them.
Tanner Craswell, 21, Mitch Maclean, 20, Shayna Conway, and Tabitha Stepple were run off the road by another vehicle which turned out to be driven by the ex-boyfriend of Stepple.
Stepple's ex-boyfriend opened fire on the vehicle killing everyone but Conway and then turned the gun on himself.
Conway and one of the young men were transported to hospital by emergency services.
The male died in hospital later Thursday morning.
Reports say the two young men were headed back to Calgary to catch a plane back home for the holidays.
Another driver called 911 to report the gunshots they heard on the highway and when RCMP arrived, they found a car and an SUV in the northbound lanes of Highway 2 about one kilometre north of Claresholm.
Conway is expected to recover and police hope she will have information about what happened.
"We believe that she is going to be able to provide us with a large amount of information about exactly what happened in the circumstances," said RCMP Sgt. Patrick Webb.
Craswell and Maclean played for the Lethbridge Bulls of the Western Major Baseball League where Craswell was named top defensive player in the league.
Their former coach Todd Hubka says both young men were innocent bystanders in a terrible situation.
There is no information on whether weapons were found at the scene.
Claresholm resident Brent Chimko told CTV News that he can't believe this kind of ugliness took place just outside his hometown.
"It's pretty shocking," Chimko said. "I've never seen anything like this."
An autopsy is expected on all of the shooting victims later on Friday.
Claresholm has a population of about 3,300 people and is located an hour and a half south of Calgary.
