A woman has died after she was hit by a CTrain on Monday morning as she tried to cross the tracks.

Police say the woman was in a marked cross walk when she was hit by an outbound train that was travelling north from the Rundle Station to the Whitehorn Station along 36 Street NE.

The 49-year-old woman walked in front of the train as it approached the intersection of Whitehorn Drive NE.

She was knocked to the ground and was transported by EMS to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

She died from her injuries at the Foothills Medical Centre.

Police say the train crossing barrier arms, warning lights, and tones were activated and functioning properly when the collision happened.

Investigators are reviewing video to determine what happened.

The identity of the victim is not known at this time.

Since the LRT opened in 1981, there have been 66 fatalities on CTrain lines with 18 of those being suicides.
