Delays due to faulty welds, design issues, and the fear of cost overruns may be a thing of the past as the final pieces of the much maligned pedestrian walkway start to come into place on Thursday.

Portions of the 850 metric ton bridge will be moved into place by a rail system across the river and then moved sideways and lowered into place.

The city says this process is a gradual one and the public will be able to witness the bridge slowly inch across the river.

Once the structure of the bridge is in place, work will begin on installing the precast pedestrian deck, the cyclist deck, handrails, lighting, security, and connections to the pathway system.

The 130 metre single span bridge that extends from the north to the south side of the Bow River is expected to be opened sometime early 2012.

The city says despite all the delays, the bridge will come in on budget at $24.5 million.
