Canmore RCMP are investigating after an 18 year old junior hockey player died unexpectedly on Wednesday.

Sharla Flett, with the Alberta Junior Hockey League says Steel died during the day.

Patrick Steel, from Sherwood Park, was a rookie with the Canmore Eagles.

The AJHL had the following statement published on their website:

"The Alberta Junior Hockey League wishes to extend its sincere sympathy to the family of Patrick Steel and the Canmore Eagles Hockey Club. Patrick passed away in Canmore, Alberta on November 9th, 2011. The cause of death is unknown at this time.

Patrick Steel was an 18 year-old rookie of the Canmore Eagles from Sherwood Park, Alberta. Last season, Patrick played Midget AAA hockey for Edmonton's Canadian Athletic Club.

The Alberta Junior Hockey League requests that everyone involved respects the privacy of the family and Patrick's teammates at this very difficult time

Information surrounding funeral services and arrangements will be made available shortly."

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
