The city has no plans to remove the Occupy Calgary protesters from Olympic Plaza despite word that the makeshift camp has already caused $40,000 in damages.

City officials are pressing Occupy Calgary protesters to move to allow them to prepare for a festival coming on the weekend.

Campers insist there is room enough for everyone and want to stay in the area.

They also say they will be staying in St. Patrick's Island past their expected departure date on the 31st.

Paul Hughes, organizer of Occupy Calgary, "As of now, the group has decided that we are not leaving on the 31st at all, because most of the people here - 95 percent of them - don't really have anywhere else to go."

At Olympic Plaza, they have agreed to move some of their tents and they've even spoken with organizers of the event who agree and say there is room for both Occupy and the Muslim Heritage festival.

But city officials aren't satisfied because they need  to prepare the space properly for future events and say they will likely need to replace the sod where the tents were.

The protesters are supporting the ongoing ‘Occupy Wall Street' demonstration in New York City which is trying to draw attention to corporate greed and the widening gulf between the rich and poor.

Campers have been at the Olympic Plaza since October 15 and vow they'll stay put.
