Friday night, a man was found in his home in medical distress, and a short while later he was dead.

Lethbridge police responded to a call from a resident whose roommate was seriously hurt.

When officers arrived on scene, they found 47-year-old Christopher Ballendine inside the house.

Police are not indicating the specifics of Ballendine's injuries, just that he had a severe injury to his upper body.

Emergency crews took Ballendine to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators are treating the death as a homicide.

"We're confident that the attack was not random and that the victim was targeted," says Staff Sgt. Wes Houston. "The attack was not drug related."

Officers have knocked on doors in the neighbourhood trying to track down details. Paula Reed, a local resident, says the home was suspicious.

"It just seemed like there was always something going on down there at that house," says Reed. "The rest of the neighbourhood is quiet but there always seemed to be police parked outside that house."

Police say, aside from Ballendine and the person who called 911, several tenants live in the home. One man who says he lives here says he showed up to find police tape and officers surrounding the house.

People are shocked a murder could occur in their community.

"I'm pretty concerned when it happens right down the street from me," says Paula Reed.

"We have a school right down the street and the place is full of kids," says Jason Henry. "That's kind of what this place is about, family and kids."

Officers say people in the neighbourhood aren't in danger.

"Rest assured this was a targeted attack it wasn't random, and public safety should not be a concern for that neighbourhood," says Staff Sgt. Houston.
