Fire gutted one house and severely damaged another in a late night blaze on Wednesday.

Calgary firefighters fought to contain the fire in Signal Hill to make sure it didn't spread out of control.

Two young boys are being credited with saving the lives of their neighbours after they woke up to the smell of smoke and a strange orange light coming from their neighbour's basement.

Billy Mustapha ran over and hammered on his neighbour's door after his father called 911. "I was really scared, I just wanted them to get out safe."

Crews arrived on scene shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday night and found one home gutted with flame and another on fire.

On scene, the chief called another alarm for additional help in fighting the blaze, but initially crews couldn't do much more than contain the fire,

Two adults were able to escape from the first home while an adult male and two children got safely out of the second home.

Crews soon gained the upper hand and knocked down the fire and are now cleaning up hot spots in the homes.

Investigation into the cause is still ongoing and crews are using thermal imaging cameras to help put out hot spots.

There is currently no estimate on damages but the home where the fire started must be torn down.

No one was injured in the fire.
