A young boy is in grave condition after he was hit by a car in northwest Calgary on Tuesday afternoon.

The 17 year old driver of the Jeep Liberty was uninjured, but very shaken up by the incident.

The boy was hit while crossing Panamount Hill by Panatella Blvd. N.W. just before 4 p.m.

Witnesses to the collision say the teen wasn't speeding when the boy ran out in front of him.

Sgt. Joerg Gottschling of the Calgary Police said that the teen didn't have any chance to stop. "There was an 8 year old boy walking northbound on the sidewalk and at the last minute decided to cross the street and ran out in front of the car."

The boy was taken to the Alberta Children's Hospital following the accident.

He is reported to have suffered severe head and chest injuries and is in life threatening condition.

The child's family says they are hoping for a miracle.

The Traffic Unit continues to investigate.
