A Manitoba man on a nation-wide warrant for murder was captured by police Thursday night while he was camping in Canmore.

51 year old Russell McDiarmid was arrested at a campsite southeast of Canmore near Dead Man's Flats.

McDiarmid is the prime suspect in the murder of 33 year old Nancy Swenty of Fisher Branch, Manitoba

She went missing July 28 and her body was found in August.

The RCMP arrested McDiarmid shortly after 7 p.m. on Thursday after they found him at the Three Sisters Campground.

They also found a stolen truck at the Lac Des Arcs day use area earlier on Thursday and soon made the connection.

Cpl. Darleen White with the Canmore RCMP said witnesses spotted McDiarmid in the Husky gas station in the restaurant area as well as the campground at Dead Man's Flats.

On September 1, McDiarmid left a note for his friend Mike Dudek along with a rifle and ammunition.

The note read 'with all the stuff that you're hearing, none of it's true. I did have her truck, I never did kill anybody, I found it on the side of the road,.. me and my sawed-off are making a run for it.'

RCMP believe McDiarmid had run out of options, abandoning the truck and having no way to keep moving outside of hitchhiking.

We believe he's been in the area for a few days," White said. "We have one unconfirmed sighting from Monday - we believe his vehicle was abandoned on the weekend."

They are arranging to have him transferred to Manitoba sometime Friday morning where he will face charges of second degree murder.
