Canadian health experts released a new report this summer on safe sleeping practices for babies.

The report advocates parents and babies share a room, but not a bed.

Sharing a room at home is relatively new advice, although maternity units have been doing it for years.

The babies are in with mom right after they are born in a hospital.

In Calgary, general nurseries are a thing of the past and unless a new born has medical issues, babies sleep in the same room as their mothers.

While the rooming-in policy means the baby sleeps in the same room as their mother, a recent tragedy in Regina illustrates the dangers of actually sleeping in the same bed.

In March, a newborn died while sleeping in a bed with her mother.

An investigation into the tragedy looked into the option of giving mothers access to a general nursery where they could leave their babies for a while but hospitals are not set up for that.

Researchers say sharing a bed or even falling asleep on the couch with your baby is risky.

Often the problem is with the surface as blankets can smother a child ot they can roll into a position where they can't breath.
