Classes don't begin for another week at the University of Calgary but Monday was 'Move-In Day' for first year students living in residence.

Move-in Day kicks off the U of C's "Epic Orientation Week" for first year students, but many returning students are involved as well.

Those arriving at the dormitories are bombarded by volunteers wearing red shirts offering to help park vehicles and unload boxes. The volunteers will even carry the boxes up to the rooms.

Sarah Hunder and Karissa Jamieson just finished moving and saying an emotional goodbye to their parents.

"It's very overwhelming, there's lots of stuff happening around you," says Jamieson. "New faces, lots of people, it will be a lot of fun."

Across the parking lot, the Robert family is saying goodbye to Sandy. They all came down from Sherwood Park for the big day.

Second, third and fourth year students provide the muscle for the first year students. Kyle Derby, Marlon Dyck and Dean Zanutig were among the volunteers.

"There's just a convoy coming in, one after another.  You get an entire truck full of stuff just for one girl, than you haul it up seven flights of stairs.  It's good exercise."

Organizers spend hours preparing to ensure Move-In Day is a smooth transition for families and first year students.

"We want to leave a very good impression," says organizer Randy Maus. "We want to make sure they feel welcome, at ease, comfortable where they are, and they're able to get to know people."

Once the boxes are moved in everything has to be put in its place. Jennifer Hatlen is getting help from her mom and sisters. She's excited to see how the epic orientation week unfolds.

"You're nervous because you're all alone, away from your family," says Hatlen. "It's fun to do activities before you start the hard work of school."

At least 1,000 first year students moved in to residence on Sunday.
