Dozens of Calgary firefighters honoured their fallen comrades at a memorial service Thursday afternoon.

Families, friends, and fellow Calgarians joined firefighters at the Police Officers and Firefighters Tribute Plaza in downtown Calgary.

In the 126 years of the Calgary Fire Department, 26 firefighters have died in the line of duty.

At the event, plaques were displayed honouring each of the fallen firefighters.

Chief Bruce Burrell of the Calgary Fire Department says the ceremony is a reminder of the risks firefighters face.

"It certainly brings home the fact this is still a dangerous profession," says Burrell. "There's still hazards associated with what we, as firefighters, do every day. Unfortunately some members have died in the service."

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the memorial ceremony.
