The suspect in a brutal British Columbia sex assault is behind bars Thursday after police found him walking along a stretch of highway near the U.S. border.

David Wesley Bobbitt was caught Wednesday evening, while walking along Highway 97 near Osoyoos, B.C.

Bobbitt had tried to camp at a property near Oliver, B.C., earlier that day, but was caught by the property owner and told to move on.

The property owner notified a police officer about the Bobbitt sighting and the suspect was arrested soon after.

Osoyoos is a border town located about an hour's drive south of Penticton, where the alleged sex assault occurred on the weekend.

Police say that a 22-year-old woman was found Sunday inside a second-hand store that Bobbitt operates in downtown Penticton.

The woman suffered through an attack that allegedly lasted more than 12 hours, in which she was bound, sexually assaulted and beaten in front of her 22-month-old son.

The woman is still recovering from her injuries in hospital.

Police issued a Canada-wide warrant for Bobbitt after the woman was found in his store.
