The fire department was called to a scaly surprise at a rental unit in northwest Calgary on Wednesday morning.

Police responded to a home on Ranch Glen Drive N.W. at about 5 :00 a.m. and found a huge snake in a bathtub.

The snake, named Hercules, was a well fed and healthy, eight foot python.

Neighbours found out about the snake when it accidentally turned on the water in the tub.

The six person crew aboard the fire truck removed the python and brought it to a local veterinarian for care.

The snake's owner, Serena Dobmeier, put the snake in the tub to keep him safe while she finished moving out.
