CTV Calgary has exclusive video inside the cockpit of an ultralight plane that crashed on Thursday west of Airdrie.

The Mayor of Crossfield, Nathan Anderson, was piloting the plane when it crashed just after 11:00 a.m.

Police say that the plane initially took off from a farmer's field.

The pilot abandoned the takeoff when he experienced insufficient lift and noticed power lines in his flight path.

When he attempted to land the plane west of Panorama Road, the plane flipped on its roof.

The men remained calm during the ordeal and were able to pull themselves from the wreckage.

It wasn't until later that day that they realized how lucky they were.

They were taken to Foothills Hospital right after the crash but have since been released with minor injuries.
