A Calgary family has surrendered their dog to animal services after it attacked a father and his daughter inside the family home.

A man called animal services after the family's black lab bit his daughter's face and then bit him in the arm.

The little girl was sent to hospital for stitches and the man was also treated.

Animal  and Bylaw Services picked up the dog on Wednesday afternoon.

The head of Calgary Bylaw Services, Bill Bruce says in-home dog attacks are on the rise in Calgary.

"We're seeing this as a growing trend in calgary. We've done a really good job in bringing our bites on the street and in public spaces down in 2009 to 58, which is the lowest in the world. Last year we saw an increase in bites go up to 102, primarily from inhouse bites," said Bruce.

Bruce says the problem often boils down to a lack of proper training.

Barbara Walmer from the Calgary Humane Society is one of only four people in Canada who has been recognized as a certified behaviour consultant.

Part of her specialty includes recognizing aggression in dogs.

Walmer says there are several problem solving methods that can control and change an aggressive dog.

"We can always modify behaviour, just like in humans, but is it modifiable to the point that it's livable for both the people that are involved with the animal and the dog itself?" said Walmer, "In some situations that might not be so, but we definitely focus more on our success stories."

Bill Bruce says they will only put the dog down as a last resort.
