The lines were moving more quickly than usual at the Banff gate as there was no charge for entry on Saturday.

Free admission to the national parks was a welcome surprise for many heading off to the mountains for a daytrip.

Established in 1911, Parks Canada is focusing on educating for the next 100 years by targeting kids. A new program launched for the centennial gives children activities to complete in the park.

Alan Bromley brought his children to the park and appreciates the importance of Banff.

"These programs make sure the parks are there for everyone to enjoy," says Bromley. "We've got to look after the park so future generations can enjoy it."

It's not just the youth being targeted. New Canadians and their families are vital to the growth of the park system.
