A small town located about 190 kilometres southwest of Edmonton is dealing with a massive flood after the region received heavy rain late Monday.

More than 100 homes in Eckville flooded overnight. Residents are now dealing with flooded basements after powerful storm pounded the region, along with the loss of power.

"This was one of those one in a 100 year or one in a 1,000 year rains, that you hope you never receive," said the Mayor of Eckville Helen Posti.

Fortis Alberta says 700 of its customers lost power and crews worked Tuesday afternoon to restore power to about 200 people in rural areas.

Homeowners Brandi and John Parsons noticed water leaking into their basement windows Monday night after the rain began to fall. The water is now shin-deep in their basement, and their backyard is flooded. The family was up all night trying to remove their possessions upstairs as the water poured in.

But their sump-pump failed, so there wasn't much more the family could do at one point, except wait for the water to recede.

"I think I just came to the fact that everything that mattered was already upstairs, my kids and my husband are all that matters and even though this is a house that our family and our friends' built, it can be replaced, and they can't," said Brandi.

The downpours nearly blocked some highways including Highway 766 between Eckville and the Highway 12 junction.

Highway 53 west of Rimbey was forced to close due to the flooding.

The community of Lacombe was also hit hard by the same storm system late Monday.

Lacombe Police said a number of areas of the town were under two to three feet of water because of heavy rain.

The rainfall was too much for the drainage system to handle, with water flooding many streets and leaking into basements.

Residents worry the clean-up may take awhile.

"To tell you the truth everything downstairs is soaked, the basement is flooded completely, and we're still trying to vacuum everything out," said Kaedin Golding, who is dealing with a flooded basement.

Some motorists were left stranded due to the heavy water on roads and highways.

And days of heavy rainfall is taking a toll on many more communities across the province. A portion of Highway 748 near Edson had to be closed. Other nearby areas are submerged under water after the Edson River spilled its banks.
