Police have taken a person of interest into custody in connection with the death of a Medicine Hat toddler.

Police were called to 32 Collins Crescent S.E. on Tuesday to assist EMS with a boy in need of medical attention.

The two year old boy was rushed to hospital where he later died.

Police say he suffered some trauma to the head.

Family members say the boy and his mother moved to Medicine Hat from Edmonton about a month ago.

His mother's boyfriend, Tjaye Heller, was looking after him when paramedics arrived at the home to render assistance.

Heller, 31, is now in police custody and considered a person of interest.

Police have not laid any charges as they are waiting for the results of an autopsy.

Heller was arrested at the scene for breaching a condition of his release on an unrelated matter.

Family members say they are trying to come to grips with losing a sweet, fun-loving boy who people couldn't help but fall in love with.

Police are treating the boy's death as a homicide due to the circumstances surrounding his death and the injuries he sustained.
