A 68-year-old Canadian man has been found dead in an apartment building in the Dominican Republic, according to local news reports.

Marcel Adam, who is reportedly from Toronto, was discovered by officials on Friday at a residence in Sosua, near the resort town of Puerto Plata.

According to local newspaper Detras del Rumo, his body showed signs of violent trauma.

In a statement emailed to CTV.ca, a spokesperson for Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs said officials are aware that a Canadian citizen has died in the Dominican Republic but could not immediately provide further details.

"Consular officials at the Canadian Embassy in Santo Domingo are working closely with local authorities to gather additional information," Claude Rochon said in the statement.

The cause of death is not yet known but Adam may have suffered a gunshot wound or a fatal blow to the head, reported the newspaper.
