Friends of a Calgary man who was charged in connection with the riots in Vancouver, after the Canucks lost the cup, say police have got it all wrong.

Josh Evans was arrested after police saw him holding a knife.

The incident happened just moments after three people were stabbed.

The most seriously injured was Sonny Jaura who is a friend of Evans.

Jaura and Evans were part of a large group who were heading home after the game when they came across four men picking on some teenaged boys.

"Me and my friends shouted at them to stop and then they turned on us. Ten seconds later I was stabbed," said Jaura.

That's when Jaura says Evans chased down the man who had stabbed him and delivered him to police in a headlock.

Jaura believes that all police saw was Evans holding a bloody knife.

Jaura says Evans jumped into action to make sure no one else would be injured in the chaos.

"Josh saw the man with a knife, grabbed him and pulled the knife out of his hands then the Vancouver police saw him and turned their guns on him," said Jaura.

Jaura says Evans probably saved someone's life and Evans' brother says anyone who knows Josh knows he is not violent.

Evans' lawyer is confident the charge against his client will be withdrawn and says police had a job to do and not much time to react.

"I can see how they come upon a guy with a knife and they want to find out what s going on and don't have time for sober reflection," said Evans' Lawyer Matthew Nathanson.

Evans is charged with possessing a weapon dangerous to public peace.

His next court appearance is in Vancouver on July 19th.
