Police have charged a man in connection with the murder of Jenna Cartwright.

In May, the body of the 21-year-old was found in a ditch on a rural road near Olds.

Late Wednesday afternoon, police announced that they have laid charges in connection to Cartwright's death.

Bashir Gaashaan, 29, was arrested in Thunder Bay on Monday and flown back to Red Deer to answer to the charges.

He also has additional outstanding warrants for his arrest in an unrelated matter.

Gaashaan is charged with:

  • One count of first-degree murder
  • One count of unlawful confinement
  • One count of offering an indignity to human remains
  • One count of sexual assault
  • One count of trafficking in cocaine

Gaashaan was remanded in custody and will appear in Red Deer Provincial Court on June 29, 2011.

Police dedicated over 4000 hours and 30 investigators to the case and continue to investigate.
