Calgary was one of three Canadian cities that took part in the 27th annual World Partnership Walk on Sunday morning.

The event took place at Prince's Island and Tara Nelson was joined by Mayor Naheed Nenshi in welcoming the participants.

The World Partnership Walk is an initiative of the Aga Khan Foundation of Canada, a non-profit organization that supports social development programs in Asia and Africa.

The walk attracts tens of thousands of Canadians in a common effort to raise funds and awareness.

Rehana Rajabali, spokesperson for the walk, says it's raised a great deal of money since it's inception. "Over the last 27 years, we've raised over $60M, 100 percent of which go directly to development projects in Asia and Africa. At the same time, we bring development education activities here at the walk to help Canadians become more aware of how they can get involved in the fights against global poverty."

Last year's walk raised $880,000.
