Police were responding to a routine domestic call on Friday night, but the situation took a turn for the worse and ended up with one man shot to death.

Cheyenne Peeace says she will not forget the image of her uncle dying in front of her. "His eyes started rolling back and he was kind of turning pale."

Two officers are on 30-day administrative leave while the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team investigates the shooting that occurred in the southeast community of Erin Woods.

Corey Peeace was shot by Calgary Police at 8 p.m. on Friday night.

Following the shooting, the quiet cul-de-sac was full of people. "Cops were everywhere and they were at the front door yelling at somebody inside the house and people were crying," says witness Martin Banasiak.

Police arrived on the scene after a 911 call was made from a woman with a male voice in the background shouting threats.

Police Chief Rick Hanson says officers who attended the scene were confronted by a man with a knife. "Clearly had intentions of either causing harm to our officers or people in that home."

Hanson says the officers were doing their job by stopping the threat as quickly and effectively as possible.

Peeace's family tells a different story, one that claims police intervention wasn't required.

They say one officer approached the door of the home and Peeace closed it as an indication to the officers they were not needed.

They do admit, however, he was holding a knife when the officers arrived. "He did, but he didn't charge at them," Cheyenne, Corey's niece said. "He just turned around and was so surprised to see them and they shot him four times."

After the shooting, the police escorted the family out of the home. "They made us walk over him to leave the house."

Police claim they've dealt with Peeace before.

Bill Criss, a neighbour, has seen it numerous times. "I can think of at least three fights that I was home for. And the neighbours, we've all been told just to call 911, not to bother with the non-emergency line."

The officers involved in the incident are being given access to any resources they may need as the investigation goes forward.

Peeace's family also said that Corey was suing the police over a Tasering incident that occurred over a year ago.

The Calgary Police Service confirms that there was a Tasering incident, but released no other details thus far.

The Chief's office does say that they have no record of any lawsuit being served.

Police continue to investigate the shooting and the family's claim of a lawsuit.
