A man is dead after he was shot by police Friday evening in the southeast community of Erin Woods.

It is believed that the 911 call came in from a woman.

Police responded in full force to a home in the cul-de-sac on Erin Meadow Close S.E. around 8:00 p.m.

Over a dozen police and emergency units converged on the area.

Witnesses at the scene described what they saw.

"I was driving by and then there was gunshots going down," said witness Martin Banasiak, "Cops were everywhere and they were at the front door yelling at somebody inside the house and people were crying."

"I heard cop cars racing down the street one after another, four or five of them," said Lori Metzger, "Afterward when I was standing outside I could smell the gunshot powder, I could smell it, and there was a haze in the air."

Police aren't saying much yet other than to confirm that a man is dead at the hands of an officer.

"I can say that something occurred in that residence that required one of our officers to use deadly force," said CPS Duty Inspector Vic Trickett, "I can confirm there has been an officer involved shooting at this location."

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been called in to investigate.

"I can confirm to you that it will be in all likelihood an ASIRT investigation. Of course the scene is now contained, witnesses taken in. Now the investigation will have to run its course," said Trickett.

Police have also confirmed another man was injured at the scene. No officers were hurt.

Police continue to investigate and we will update this story online and on the CTV News at 6 on Saturday.
