A 35 year old hockey arena in the Calgary's southeast is getting a makeover this weekend.

Hockey Calgary and Lowe's teamed up to give the Frank McCool arena a $50,000 renovation.

Volunteers helped paint the stands, walls, boards, and benches.

Changes were made to help modernize the facility, including a new locker room for women and replacing the old lights with energy efficient lighting.

"It's an expense to buy new lighting, it's an expense to operate the facility on a monthly basis so replacing all that and upgrading insulation in the ceiling is gonna reduce all the operating costs and it's not a burden. and at the end of the day, the important thing is that kids who can't afford to go to a private rink can have a great community rink right here," said HGTV's Bryan Baeumler, who helped with the reno.

Lowe's donated the money for the renovation.

The Frank McCool arena is the first of 10 arenas to be involved in the rink reno.
