Residents along Calgary's two rivers are keeping a close watch as the water levels rise and creep up onto lawns and flood yards.

The city is doing some sandbagging along the Elbow River after they had to open more valves on the Glenmore Dam to relieve some of the pressure in the reservoir.

The released water has increased flow to 160 cubic metres per second on the Elbow.

Several pathways and yards along the river are under water.

The city is monitoring the situation in case they have to stack up more sandbags.

They have also been going door to door in many low lying neighbourhoods, including Rideau and Roxborough, warning people to remove valuables from their basements.

"Check their back flow prevention devices in the basement and make sure they're working properly so that they don't experience any sewer backups into their basements," said Zennon Zalusky, Director of the City of Calgary Water Services.

The city is also advising Calgarians to stay off the rivers and says rafting and boating is just too dangerous right now.

The boom just above Harvie Passage (formerly known as "the weir") on the Bow River was dislodged by the increased water flow and debris in the water.

The boom is a safety guard that prevents boaters from going into the construction zone.

The fire department says no one should be on the rivers now because the debris and fast moving water make for a deadly combination.
