After months of haggling, the Calgary Airport Authority has accepted the city's latest offer to construct an underpass under the new runway.

The authority agreed to the city's new proposal on Friday afternoon.

The revamped deal will see Airport Trail extended from Barlow Trail to 36 Street N.E., and go under the runway.

The underpass will provide an east-west connector and future LRT right of way for commuters and travelers.

Council and the airport authority must still finalize a sublease agreement to allow the city to enter the airport grounds before construction can begin.

That agreement is expected to be signed by mid-June.

"This is a huge step forward for Calgary," said Alderman Jim Stevenson, speaking on behalf of the Mayor. "Now we can begin to plan for multiple ways for goods and people to move to and from the airport," he said.

Steven son went on to say "I want to personally thank YYC Chair Doug Mitchell and all members of the Board for working so hard over the last week to make this happen. The airport is an important partner with the city and we both want to act in a way that is good for Calgary, now and into the future."

The city says that the underpass is an integral part of the northeast road network and an important connection between the airport and the rest of the city.

They also believe that this was the most viable way to provide future LRT to the airport terminal from the northeast line.
