The province's top doctor is warning people about the high rates of sexually transmitted infections and has some advice on what can be done to prevent them.

The provincial government is launching an awareness and prevention campaign because Alberta has the highest rate of several STI's in all of Canada.

From 2005 to the end of March this year, 25 babies have been born with Congenital syphilis.

Of the babies infected, 9 have died and the others will need long term follow up.

Neurosyphilis, which affects the brain or spinal cord, has been found in 56 adults and 18 have had their vision affected.

These infections can have serious consequences and some can lead to infertility and increase the risk of being infected with HIV.

Experts have been warning Alberta's health ministers for several years about the problem but the opposition says little was done.

Alberta now has the highest rates of Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Infectious syphilis in Canada.

"For a variety of reasons we have a large number of people engaging in high risk behaviors and that's what we want to tackle," said Andre Corriveau, Alberta Chief Medical Officer of Health.

The awareness campaign includes TV ads and will target places frequented by people at higher risk.
