Investigators are now saying that 14-month-old Sarvia Velasquez was murdered.

The Calgary Police Service and Office of the Chief Medical Examiner made the change to the case after an autopsy report released in December 2010 said the toddler had died of asphyxia and it was non-accidental.

Early in the morning in May 2, 2010, police were called to a home on 44 St. S.E. for a medical emergency.

Sarvia was transported to the Alberta Children's Hospital where attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.

The autopsy conducted the next day was inconclusive and further tests were ordered.

Cause of death investigation was initiated by the CPS Homicide Unit and the Forensic Crime Scenes Unit.

The Homicide Unit continues to investigate this case.
