A man was arrested in Tijuana, Mexico in connection with a 2010 Calgary homicide and is awaiting deportation to Canada to face a first-degree murder charge.

Police issued warrants for Pablo Rodrigo Russell, 34, for first-degree murder and one count each of accessing and possessing child pornography on Tuesday March 15, 2011.

Russell was detained by Mexican officials on Wednesday, when he was unable to provide proper documentation when asked why he was in the country.

Mexican officials then discovered the warrants for his arrest and contacted Canadian officials.

Russell is wanted in Calgary in connection with the murder of 57-year-old Serafino Virgilio on Tuesday, January 19, 2010.

Virgilio was located inside a vehicle that was parked in the 100 block of Falsmere Way N.E. An autopsy revealed that he was the victim of a homicide.

Investigators believe he was killed on Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, while in a home in the 200 block of Falshire Way N.E., and later hidden inside a 1999 GMC Denali.

Russell has since been transferred to Mexico City where he is awaiting a deportation hearing.

The Service is consulting with both Canadian and Mexican immigration officials to have Russell returned to Calgary as soon as possible.

It is not known how long this process will take.
