The Green Party of Canada wants to see high-speed rail lines built between some major Canadian centres including Calgary and Edmonton.

Other suggested rail line routes include Windsor and Quebec, Halifax and Sydney, and Regina and Saskatoon.

"We are calling on all parties to agree that Canada will benefit environmentally, socially and economically from investing in high-speed rail on major corridors across the country," said Green Leader Elizabeth May in a news release.

May says these lines will halve the travel times between major cities and make taking the train easier and faster than flying.

Travel time between Calgary and Edmonton would be cut down by as much as 50 minutes, and also save families up to $4,000 per year, she said.
