The City Planning Commission took a hard look at development permits for special event party tents on Thursday.

The commission voted in favour of a proposal to require outdoor tents to get development permits.

Councilor Druh Farrell is in favour of the decision and says noise and patron behaviour has become an issue in recent years.

Farrell says she heard from constituents complaining they couldn't walk down certain sidewalks because of line ups outside the tents. People also told her that the out of hand partying was making life unbearable for those living near them.

Counselor Gord Lowe disagreed saying forcing tents to get a development permit is overkill.

City administration reviewed 3-1-1 complaints from last summer and found many were from people upset by noise coming from restaurant and bar tents set up in and around the core during Stampede.

The tent operators are upset with the decision. A spokesperson for one group says the timing is bad.

He says that tent operations could be jeopardized as the permit process takes some time to complete and they may not be able to get the required permits in time for this year's Stampede.

The issue goes before City Council in May.
