Some local teens are heading to Mexico to help build homes for three families in need as part of the Homes of Hope program.

They are all battling cancer and this is a way for these teenagers to show they are more than a diagnosis.

"I was given so much when I was going through treatment and I was given so many opportunities that it's a good thing to be able to give back those same opportunities," said Samantha Andres.

Andres lost her leg to cancer when she was 8. She now has a clean bill of health and is ready to join other kids from the Kids Cancer Care Foundation in Mexico.

Each teen is responsible for raising $1000 for their airfare, meals and accommodation and the rest of the tab will be covered by a donation from Rotary Club Member Dan Doherty.

15-year-old, Davis Weisner is also going on the trip. He is still fighting cancer and says he is not letting that get in his way.

"Never give up, even if the doctor says you don't have a very good chance, just never give up," said Davis Weisner

The kids were on hand at Bankers Hall on Thursday and passed around collection cans to raise awareness about childhood cancers and raise money for the home building project.

The teens will build the homes over two days and will leave next month to start the project in Ensenada, Mexico.

Calgarians can donate to the project online at the Teen Leadership Mexico Project website.
