RCMP officers have taken a man into custody in Canmore after he tried to stab one of them with a hypodermic needle.

The incident happened when an RCMP officer tried to stop a vehicle on Highway 1 near Banff for a traffic violation just before noon on Friday.

The vehicle did not stop and continued on into Banff at a slow rate of speed.

An officer managed to stop the vehicle and tried to grab the keys out of the ignition when the male occupant attempted to stab him with a hypodermic needle.

The officer fired one shot into the vehicle before the driver took off again and headed east on Highway1.

Police originally initiated a pursuit but called it off because of the danger to other drivers. Traffic was stopped on the Trans-Canada and spike belts were deployed but the vehicle managed to avoid them.

The vehicle was eventually stopped in Canmore when it ran over a spike belt. The man got out of the vehicle and threatened police again with the needle.

Officers used a taser to take the man into custody. He is being treated for an apparent gunshot wound to the lower body.

No one else was injured and ASIRT is looking into the incident
